This was an experiment to see what impact not having comments would have on a new blog.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(235, 244, 254);\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(235, 244, 254);\">I quickly discovered that starting a blog this way had quite a few negative impacts upon the site \u2013 the main one being that not having reader feedback just felt plain weird and left ME as the blogger thirsting for interaction with readers. I guess I\u2019d become used to getting readers engagement on my other blogs and without it just felt \u2018wrong\u2019 for my style of blogging.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(235, 244, 254);\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(235, 244, 254);\">Within a few weeks I\u2019d not only turned comments back on at dPS but was already working towards starting a photography forum on the site too!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(235, 244, 254);\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(235, 244, 254);\">The impact of adding more and more opportunity for community engagement on the site was immediate and big. Page views went up, repeat\/loyal readership increased, the quality of the site improved and monetization opportunities opened up.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(235, 244, 254);\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: rgb(235, 244, 254); font-size: 24px;\">15 years on, Digital Photography School is still going strong <strong>because<\/strong> we have a thriving community of readers.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: var(--tcb-color-2); font-size: 24px;\">One of the most common questions that I hear from bloggers is: <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><span style=\"color: var(--tcb-color-2); font-size: 24px;\">\u201cHow do I get my readers to interact with me?\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: var(--tcb-color-2); font-size: 24px;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><span style=\"color: var(--tcb-color-2);\">But <\/span><span style=\"color: rgb(255, 103, 31);\"><strong>WHY<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"color: var(--tcb-color-2);\">would you want readers to interact with you?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><span style=\"color: var(--tcb-color-2);\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><span style=\"color: var(--tcb-color-2);\">Well, interaction and engagement with your readers increases your blog\u2019s <strong>relevance and usefulness<\/strong>. There\u2019s also <strong>social proof <\/strong>&#8211; people attract people in all kinds of places, a blog is no exception.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><span style=\"color: var(--tcb-color-2);\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><span style=\"color: var(--tcb-color-2);\">If you have reader engagement and a community on your blog you will get more <strong>page views<\/strong> and <strong>attract more advertisers<\/strong>. Having a community will make it easier for you to <strong>create and sell products<\/strong> and makes your blog more <strong>attractive to sell<\/strong>, if you ever wanted to.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><span style=\"color: var(--tcb-color-2);\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><span style=\"color: var(--tcb-color-2);\">Your blog community will also form an <strong>army of advocates<\/strong> and evangelists to attract even more readers to your blog.
